'Age doesn't matter'

 Yeah right.

So you're 50 something, you've got heaps of 'transferable qualifications and experiences, and for whatever reason you're looking for a new role where you can engage those transferable skills.

What are your chances?

Short Answer: It depends, but on average less than someone who is younger than you but more than someone who's homeless due to income instability.

Some Barriers.

Ineligible for government graduate programs if your degree is more than 5 years old.

Ineligible to join the forces (even in a desk role) unless you are 'between 3 & 6 years away from compulsory retirement' PS That number is 60 not the age you qualify for Age Pension. So if you're around 55+ keep searching.

Sure there are laws in Australia that make it unlawful to visibly discriminate against someone based on their age ... blah... blah ... blah, but the reality is those laws won't protect you from a torrent of polite rejection letters, because your degree is 20 years older than you, and your age doesn't align with unspoken criteria - Must be under 50.

We went on a hunt to find affirmative measure job postings, postings that might address age based discrimination similar to postings that affirmatively target racial and disability discrimination and came up with ZERO.

Currently we are actively scrolling through the job boards in search of potential authentic, mature age friendly employers, employers who don't just post 'We welcome diversity ...' but actual do and INCLUDE  OB50 candidates in the mix .

We'll keep you posted with our results.

If you are a reputable employer who authentically welcomes trade or tertiary qualified mature age workers over 50 to your  space, or you know of an employer who does, please let us know.

Although we couldn't find any affirmative measure postings targeted at mature age candidates at this site, the site does actively  post affirmative measure job listings targeted at  indigenous and disability candidates and actively declares welcoming a positive diverse workforce, inclusive of mature age workers with a range of skillsets.

Work180 positions itself as the go to site to source employers actively looking to hire women to join their workplaces. 'We only list jobs from employers who meet our endorsement standards and are committed to helping women thrive.'Maybe these employers are more inclusive of older workforce too?
